PokerNews has learned that Phil Ivey is suing a British-based casino for withholding his ?7.8 million ($12.1 million) winnings.
Nine-time World Series of Poker bracelet winner Phil Ivey won ?7.8 million playing Punto Banco at Crockfords casino in August 2012, but the Genting-owned casino refused to pay Ivey his winnings. After months of negotiations failed to bring a resolution, Ivey decided to file suit at the High Court in London today, May 7.
Commenting on the suit, Ivey said:
?I am deeply saddened that Crockfords has left me no alternative but to proceed with legal action, following its decision to withhold my winnings. I have much respect for Gentings, which has made this a very difficult decision for me.
?Over the years I have won and lost substantial sums at Crockfords and I have always honoured my commitments. At the time, I was given a receipt for my winnings but Crockfords subsequently withheld payment. I, therefore, feel I have no alternative but to take legal action.?
Ivey?s huge win was first reported in the English newspaper the Daily Mail, where it was claimed Ivey was playing Punto Banco for ?50,000 per hand. Ivey, accompanied by a ?beautiful Oriental woman,? was stuck ?500,000 at one stage, but after gaining permission to increase the stakes to ?150,000 per hand, went on an extraordinary winning streak that saw Ivey claw back his initial losses and finish ?2.3 million in profit.
Ivey is then thought to have returned to Crockfords ? the oldest active casino in the U.K. ? the following night where he ran up another astronomical win that took his total winnings to ?7.8 million.
Ivey?s lawyer, Matthew Dowd of Archerfield Partners, said:, ?It is with great regret that Phil has been forced to issue court proceedings against Crockfords to secure payment of his winnings. The matter is now in the hands of the Court.?
Ivey is represented by Archerfield Partners and Richard Spearman QC.

Phil Ivey is the best player in world, i don't know how many braslets he have but i think many also big cashes in all tournament she is the best i think so.

Casinos need to make profit, this time they didn't and refused to pay out to Ivey. Ivey is repsresented by great Lawyers, and sure he is gonna win, and Cockfords Casino will be closed down.

Can't blame Ivey for taking advantage of the casinos dumb mistake.. his job is to play cards and make money, he sees an advantage he will take it..

Phil Ivey is the hero of the poker. This is the top man, really respect to his mastery!

I think the casino is a joke and is acting in a criminal matter themselves. Even if he did create an advantage for himself they just watched him take that much money in three days. Im sure they wouldnt have had a problem taking his cash if he lost. Not sure how this would be a good place for any real gamblers to play in the future. They should be ashamed of themselves.

How is it considered cheating? Even so how can the casino deduce that was what he was doing? Furthermore they let him sit there for three days and do it. What kind of operation is this? They have the balls to accuse of him cheating, but can't process this information within the time from he was playing and stop it. I love how people make up their own rules as the go along, they are joke and should be charged with stealing.

Exactly, this is the casinos fault for not stopping the game immediately if they thought something was up. i dont think any judge would side with the casino

I love it.... Half of the noobs here are defending Phil Ivey because they worship him. Phil Ivey is a crook.... FLAT OUT. Phil Ivey was getting paid millions of dollars by FTP and was a major part of the company. I am not gullible enough to believe he was unaware of what was going on behind the scenes. Additionally, I read the story and it seems pretty likely he was cheating. I have seen videos where Ivey has also angle shot some opponents. In poker, the lines usually aren't black and white.... they often are blurred. In a game where lying is mandatory, it is no surprise that poker players are all degens. Phil Ivey is a crook. He is a good 1 though, because he has plausible deniability in the FTP scandal.

The court papers say that Ivey and his accomplice, after some trial and error, found a "shoe" that contained decks of cards with an asymmetrical design. They were then able to convince the dealer, after cards were revealed, to turn the card either sideways or end over end. The staff was not suspicious because the accomplice, who spoke Cantonese with the dealers, acted like she was superstitious and just changing the way the cards lay for good luck, court papers say.
The effect was that the dealer inadvertently sorted the cards so that 7, 8 and 9 cards were distinguishable from others. Ivey sustained his success, the court papers claimed, by asking that the cards be shuffled automatically by a machine, which meant the way the cards were arranged was not altered as the game progressed.
The court papers also claim that Ivey specifically asked for an Asian dealer so his accomplice could communicate with that dealer in a language not known by the rest of the casino staff.

custom you my boy, but you are wrong on this one, they owe ivey that money and they should pay him, if he owe peeps in other affairs then he should pay them, but this is a different matter

It's hard to believe this. It seems that Mr. Ivey has had a few problems with live play as well as online. I think it's time for him to find a new occupation

Pretty funny if you walk into a casino and have to sue for money. Probably was playing with casino money just to promote the casino. He did not realize this and thought all winnings should be his. He was playing for the house. Most likely the case, some sort of scam is going on somewhere.
