You need to find freerolls that either don't have a lot of players or a game where you have an advantage.
Your best bets are the private freerolls, like PokerOwned. The fields are smaller and 1 in 10 get paid rather than the 1 in 100+ for the freerolls open to all.
Your choice of game can help. I used to do well in the Razz and Badugi freerolls as most of the other player have no idea what they are doing. I have three final tables and one win in HORSE on Carbon as I clean up in Razz and Stud sessions.
Carbon's main freerolls aren't that great. Too many players (5000 although HORSE is less) and few payouts (27 coupons, top 4 get cash). However in the sit and go section they have what are call Fun Steps. Win Step 3 and get a buck. If you are good you should be able to win enough to start playing cash games in a week.
I use to like the points freerolls on Bodog. Their normal freerolls still had a lot of players, although it seemed easier to cash, however their points freerolls did not. While you needed points to enter getting points was easy. All you had to do was sit at the play money tables and they gave you points for your time there. You could get enough points to play 2-3 freerolls a week. I can no longer play on Bodog so I don't know if they still do that.

If you live outside of the US you will have far more luck! As there are way more sites to play at.

Private freerolls are the way to go and you have to be lucky, play as well as you can but you'll need to be lucky too!
