Is it really worth it? esp. in freerolls, seems like way better to accumulate... any thoughts?
i've been doing so, and ijust feel like i'm wasting time... any thts appreciaqted
its a marathon not a sprint race
My opinion - you should get away from thinking about whether it's a freeroll or not - try to play well regardless of the buy-in. And, yes, that means waiting for your spots. It doesn't mean that you never play non-premium hands or never bluff - it means you try to get a sense of the table and pick your spots for any given strategy.
I agree with most of the opinions above. It is a marathon not a race. Even though you r playing tighter you should still be thinking accumulate over survival. +ev moves are +ev moves. You cannot pass on them just because it is early in the tournament.
You cant accumulate if your not in it can ya? shoving bs just cause its a freeroll(im assuming the poker sites freeroll) doesnt make any sense IMO.. if its a PO freeroll then its not really a freeroll since you have to take time and either earn points(whts your time worth) or buy the points. either way its not free!!
play tight in the beginning because so many dumb donks get rewarded with shit cards
Try playing tight and broadening your range as time progresses in a tourney. A lot of players will accumulate and play aggressive early in a re-buy tourney esp in unlimited re-buys. You have to know your opponent and exploit a player that is predictable.
I have been playing tight, and have almost exclusively 11-15th place finishes. I think you need to know the players at your table and make a hero call once in awhile. Need to play strong hands strong and use your position @ table wisely. It feels like I'm 1 or 2 calls away from being ITM, but also 1-2 calls away from going out in 30th. Gotta gamble sometimes and hope to hit.
play tight is a good a strategy but not special at freerolls
I find it very hrd to play tight in freerolls like some of u on here like to do!
freeroll.. depends how bad you want to win. learning to play tight can get you far in lasting the bubble.
If you get great hands, get in there, but if you're being dealt bad hands, it doesn't make much sense to force yourself to get in there, playing tight can save you.
i think its all a matter of who you are up against... in a freerolll you are most likely up against a bunch of fishy donks... so best bet is to play tight... wait for big hands... and stack folks....
the same applies to all tournys i think.... theres a time to play tight. and a time to loosen up.
i agree with hops thumbsup!
IMO playing tight early is bad choice. So much free money out there. Depends how bad your stressing the loss thouhg cause you may catch a bad beat
I beg to differ on playing tight early in freerolls. There is indeed a ton of easy money available, but you aren't getting it if you wait for premium pocket pairs. Often time, top pair can pay off early in a FR. So, yes - be careful. Play tight AFTER the flop. thats where the $$ is
I consistently place top 10 in 300-800 player freerolls and top 30 in 1600+ with playing tight early then getting looser as the blinds to stack ratio dwindles for the majority. If and only if you can catch a premium hand early and capitalize on it, would I suggest playing loose-ish in the early part of a freeroll. If you can double up in the first five to ten minutes, then you'll have chips to spare incase someone donks out on you. If I can get an early double up, I usually get to chip lead and maintain it the entire freeroll, but if not then I'm happy staying below average and slowly increasing. I'm pretty comfortable with play at about 8-10BB stack size and used to just afk until the blinds got that high. Though I've found slowly increasing my stack to be rewarding in making it more consistent to final table.
I think playing tight in the beginning is good, and be aggressive when blinds get bigger.
I like to play pretty tight early in tourneys. This gives a chance for all the crazies to shove all in and narrow the playing field. If I late register I may play a little more agressive
Always depends on my table... If I am at a tight table, I'll play aggressively, if im at an aggressive table, I'll tighten up. If I am at a semi loose, semi tight table, I will be looking more against which player I am going up against in order to adjust my play.
its tricky. depends mostly on what type of tourney and what the prizes are
generally I play loose in beginning, tighten up in the middle. and depending on my stack size near the bubble I will loosen back up or play really tight
The best way to combat a loose table is to play tight, and a tight one to play loose and steal.
Early on, everyone's stack in relation to the blinds is huge, hence they play more hands, which means you should be more selective
In later stages, it is obviously way more +ev to loosen up when everyone is folding PF a ton more because their stack in relation to the blinds is much smaller.
play tight until it's time for aggression.... that means shove when you got the nuts boy
I was actually thinking of trying to join at the last minute for late registration. Then sit out for a while and walk away. It would save time I think
It just all depends on how everybody else is playing..if they playing crazy just sit back and catch them if everybody is okaying tight then you can loosen it up its always different
In a free roll doesn't everyone just try to play tight? or is it generally a more loose field?
I think alot of it depends on the tourney your in the more people there are 700 plus public freerolls you might have to build some sort of stack in the beginning so you can survive all the donks that get lucky against you .Under a 100 people I think it's better to try in survive as long as possible and get agressive with good cards when the pots are huge.
It depends on the field for me as well. I play a little loose early in some of the PO freerolls especially the ones with quicker structure and excessive players. I play super loose in regular freerolls where 1 percent or less of the fields gets paid. Still in other freerolls especiall the ones where 20 percent or more get paid I try to play tighter. That being said, it is still a freeroll and I can get away from my strategy quite often.
yeah definitely play tight if im in the pot play even tighter cause ive got it
yeah it's worth it. u can't win the tournament in the first hour. I used to play lots pots early but it's better to play tight till blinds go uip
best time to go all out and take chances though with the lower blinds.
the best way to look at it all i think is to play loose till people catch on then tighten up. its never too early to bluff!!!
I would definitely be tight. Say the tournament is 1500 start, and you jump off to 7000...it doesn't really matter because there's still probably 300+ people in the freeroll. Of course, the 7000 start is nice, but its better to win slowly and be strategic about it.
I would suggest calling more hands early in the tournament since you generally have more chips in the beginning and the blinds are real low. When it starts to get to the point where you have twenty or less big blinds then I would suggest tightening up.
Early I consider who I'm up against and the quality of my hand and position. If I can get away with a raise in late position with so so hands I will. In a freerolll though I am likely up against a bunch of fish so I play tight usually and wait for big hands.
You play tight early in a tournament because you cannot win the tournament in the early stages but you certainly can lose it if you get too wild and loose.
free rolls are for people to practice their new strategies and often don't have consistent plays
i also think that playing tight early is predictable and readable to many of the good players that are trying to be aggressive
