i would probably put him on A3 or A6, i would continuation bet there.

From the way it sounds I would have done what you did and just flatted him on the river as well.And just as a strategy question why check the turn?Did you suspect a check/raise/bluff or was the idea just to get to showdown as cheap as possibe?
