Hey guys, new player, just wondering how you build a bankroll successfully online?
Bankroll management is the most important factor to being successful online. It's easy to build from freerolls but only if you want to grind micro stakes. Don't play out of your limits. I need to take my own advice.
Also, sign up for 2+2 and Pct 5's if your serious about poker. The people on this site are friendly, but your not going to get what you need on here. GL :)
ditto the above. Best way to build a bankroll is not spend or decrease ur bank roll...i.e. find a sustainable way to make it go up and continue whatever activity that is.
try sngs, cash, mtts. find your niche. If you have 0 dollars, then play freerolls until you have a few buy ins.
if you are bad at poker than stick to freerolls and spend 90% of your time learning from videos, forums, and ur freeroll mistakes or successes.
realistically, the best thing to do is what you find to work. this means that you will invariably be risking ur bankrool to find out. just win a lot of freerolls and bring up ur bankroll, to where you have enough buyins to where it wont hurt too bad.
if ur decent i find 2nl on bcp to be the weakest cash game u could play.
also yeah def register for 2+2 and pocket 5s those forums are where its at. They dont help boost ur br direclty, but they are invaluable in terms of learning the game.
gripsed poker videos on youtube are really great if u are a beginner.
once u make a few hundred off poker, i strongly suggest spending ur first 150 you take out on deuces cracked.
if you are new, checkout the options for poker tracker software. There are promotions where u can get software for free if u register with certain sites as a new member. The two best i recommend are PT4 and HM2.
also sharkscope.com and pokertableratings.com are good sites to check your stats and see how you are doing, or get intel on your opponents.
thanks for the info plutogon.
I need to try and be more disciplined. Lost the 2.60 I won :(
Freerolls are the way. Build upto $20 or $30. Play in monthly leagues, daily freerolls etc... Then once you build a solid bankroll to start with, takeup cash or sng whatever you specialize in...
for me playing cash games are the best way to build a bankroll then play big tournamnet
It's not easy if you have a very small bankroll. Try to save up a few cashes from po freerolls.
thanks for the pokerology site Natevest...i didnt know about it before. and yeah, the po freerolls are gonna help you out a lot.
be aware though, that po players play more solidly than regular freeroll players, and rightly so as these guys are all trying to better there game or have had to work hard to get points.
Yeah, PO freerolls are a great way to start boost your tiny bankroll. However when you gather couple of bucks, you should maybe try sit&go's or some MTT tournaments with small buy-in to try shot on bigger cashes. It is up to you if you believe in your poker mastery ;)
you build a bankroll by winning hands, tourneys, etc.... Duh! less donking and being patient till you get the nuts bro
Fact of it is you just have to win!!!!!!!!!
Building a bankroll takes time and discipline. If you can not practice bankroll management then this game is not for you. I know dozens of friends who have tried to play this game. All of them were very skilled but they went busto. They took shots above their bankroll. And before they knew it, they were broke. Here is what I use:
200 tournament buyins
25-50 buyins for cash games
40 buyins for sit n gos
500 big bets for limit poker
after you understand some of those concepts the biggger thing you have to remember is you need to win! :)
Black Chip Poker has a freeroll running about every hour. It's a lot of people so its a good learning curve for tournaments. If you stick to the freerolls, at least you won't lose your bank roll...then if you win a couple, you can always try your luck at a .50 cent tournament and keep your risk low.
you can start off in the PO games............................................. .................
thanks for all of the advice guys. i really appreciate it. what would you guys consider a good starting amount for lowest limit games?
The best way to build a bankroll is to go to work... This may sound cheesee but it is true.
Now let's talk about building a bankroll from nothing. It will definitely take time. But is not interesting to make it from "Zero to Hero"? Furthermore starting from zero like some said enables you to learn without losing money. Build steadily your bankroll and start playing the lowest limit. Sng is a possibility and they dont require a crazy bankroll. With time you will probably reach the point where you don't need to play those freeroll anymore but you need to keep good bankroll management principles.
Best of luck at the tables :)
My advice to start is to play within your means.don't jump out and play tourneys more than 2% your bankroll unless starting real small. Don't put your last in a bigger buy in when smaller more people is avalible.
I agree whole heartedly but u can also try the double up sit and gos for for 2 or 3 bucks as well
It's tough to build a bankroll .
That pretty much sums it up. However, you could be one of the lucky ones. Certain players have a knack for just being plain lucky early on in their poker careers. My late friend Dale was unlucky with his heart problem, but in poker, he could do no wrong. The very first live tourney experience he had was, to enter into a satellite in the WSOP's non-bracelet evening event. He won his seat into the 11pm event, then went on to take down the event, 1st place, no chop, for $12K+. His knowledge of poker was very limited as witnessed by a phone call he made to me once early in his career. He said "Hey, you got to watch out if the board is paired, it means they could have a full house" duh...really? This phone call to me was AFTER his extreme luckbox 1st place finish for $12K+. Some people are just plain lucky in poker, and you might be one of those persons.
I would sometimes rail my friend Dale as he was taking down another tourney.. deep deep deep into the tournament, he would get AA, he would be all in with someone and his AA would hold up and he would double up or knock out his opponent. Next hand? Yep AA again, again all in with someone else, again he doubles or knocks out his opponent. OVER AND OVER AND OVER again I witnessed my friend taking down tournaments or finishing on the final table somewhere around 3rd place, his competition sometimes being well-known pros. It can and does happen to some people sometimes.
Online it's the same way....there are certain people I see, who play really badly (or so it would seem), but they just are LUCKY LUCKY LUCKY (not short term, but long term). Some of these guys will take way too many rebuys or re-entries into the $1 or $5 buy-ins I see them play, even taking their 10th rebuy or re-entry just as late registration is expiring and only getting 5 bb for their buy-in. Result??? Right after late reg ends, they start getting really lucky....they end up in 1st, 2nd or 3rd way too often for it to be mathematically feasible....and they do this OVER AND OVER AGAIN!!! This is the reason many people think online poker is rigged...it's because the person who thinks it's rigged is experiencing average luck instead of the EXTREME luckbox good luck certain people are able to experience and carry this extreme luckboxness far far far into their career. By the time their luck runs out, they could be milliionaires, I'm not really sure how far they take it because I'm not familiar with any of these online luckboxes personally.
Good luck to you in your quest.
Assuming you CAN deposit some money,
1. Learn to play; specialize in a narrow field first. I prefer ring games over tournaments due to lower variance. I'd like full table NLHE or limit holdem. Pick 1 variant at first to simplify learning
a. read some books
b. go to a bookstore and ready for free :P
c. borrow books from a friend
d. read the forums a LOT
e. 2+2 has a lot of good books on the shelves
2. Play stakes where you have at least 20x (preferably) 50x 100bb stack buyins for NLHE ring, or 500 (preferably 1000+) big-bets for limit. Don't move up until unless you can meet bankroll coverage requirements AND have a long-term, 10,000 min hand streak
If you are playing with 2% of your BR and you bust out (50x), then you are doing something wrong. You need to find out why you are losing - and its not just bad luck. Adjust your game and try again.
i started at the freerolls and started building my bankroll that way takestime and patience but it will pay off eventually play smart and tight in early stages of a tourney let the fishes bust each other out i went from 0 to 85 bux right now in 2 weeks. Watch vidoes on how to manage your bankroll and how to play good and profile your opponents at the table when ur out of the hand watch betting patterns what type of player are they stuff like that evenually u will make good decisions at the table
For a new players it is always good to start with Freerolls . I remember wining like 16$ from a freeroll and then make it to 200$ when i was a pretty much beginner. The most important thing is to be patience and dont make a huge risks and gambling .A good way to practise this is to play limit games .You gonna go better and better in the game and BM.Good luck!
little luck never hurts either
i have never made a deposit of my own money - started way back when at a site called Pokertropolis- they gave me $10 to play and I went from there - was easy then with netteller and what not
now twice i have started with promotions and freerolls and have done well
cake once gave me $10 to come back and i turned it into 500 in a matter of months
now PO has got me started on BCP - through points freerolls i made 1.50 and have turned that into 20 bucks in a week - believe me you NEVER have to make a deposit or use your own money - BUT stick to stake levels that are appropriate to your roll or you will get outdrawn and lose it all
Its harder for the US micro stakes player now. Pstars had penny tourneys that were as good as anything for training and BR building, but now other sites don't have much for less than $1 buy-ins. So if you only win $2.75 in a FR and need to build your BR - good luck! you'll need some. I recommend a double or nothing SNG if you only have a few bucks.
On a side note i can tell that black chip poker seems like a great place to start if you want to play MTT. Getting in the top 10 of freeroll doesnt seem very hard and you can have several of them on at the same time. Once you got a few bucks you can try the 25$ guaranteed. The level of play is slightly superior to the freerolls but it will give a first experience to the real money game.
going to try grinding this freerolls see how my luck goes
freerolls are a good start
Play lots of Po tourneys till u build up a few bucks then play small mtts!!
