Very important. Lack of confidence can cause you to make bad judgement calls

It can make or break you're tournament. When you're confident, it just feels like everything's going y our way.

    Essential

However confidence is often confused with arrogance (aka Phil Helmuth is a good example)

It is a good player who is confident his pair of Aces on a low non paired rainbow board is doing well but still possibly weak to 2 pair
It is a bad player who is arrogant into thinking that the same situation, nothing has him beat

Confident players with the right skill can get away from a poor drawing hand or a made but weaker hand will go far in a tornament
Arrogant players will often regardless of skill, make mistakes that depending on the situation will cost them a good size of chips or knock them out

If you can be both types of players, this makes you a force and you will win multi million $$$ events however even the pros who can play like this Sami Faha is a good example need to be a lot more Confident than arrogant.

Don't forget, luck balances outs more or less down the line
Bad moves and poor judgement will get you possibly a few extra pots but you will lose a great deal more

I think confidence is probably more important in live tourneys then in online tournaments.
