How to deal with 'scary' money?

Hi,

I played on full tilt poker and won a step 1 ticket, eventually I won till I came to step 3 ($28) ticket.
Now I used that ticket for a big MTT with a huge prizepool 1st was $75000 and 2nd was $45k
I was incredibly scary at the beginning, I had no idea how to handle the stress.
I even went several times to the bathroom 5 min before the tournament would start.
It was horrible, I was way to tight, couldnt do anything.

This was a long time ago but I would like to see how you guys handle it, when you are scared.
Any advice that I can get helps me!

If the money scares you its a very good sign you shouldn't be playing that tournament. Its alright to take some shots, but if it effects the way you play its too big.

wow, I can only imagine you playing a live tourney. Using the bathroom 5 times before the game is a little overboard to me but hey I don't do anything that makes me nervous or scared.

Whenever I feel like i'm playing like scary money I slap myself and tell myself it's only money, just play poker andd have fun!

hahaha...I guess when we all first started we all got a lil nervous in bigger tournys but it just goes away unless its towards the end.

You just have to play through it. Nothing to be scared of really. It's only money, lol.

anytime you go into the unknown you become scared.. but i learned through experience that if your going to play.. play exactly the same way you would in any other tournament.. and after the game is finished its not a bad idea to go through your hands to see what you could of done differently.. its all a learning exp

Rinse and Repeat, Rinse and Repeat, Rinse and Repeat, The edge will go away after you played a tournament of substance again and again. Most of the time you will find that is the same chitty play as lower stakes. Don't think of it as money either, try to think of it as a tool. Just like a carpenter uses a hammer to build, you must use your buy ins to build. Good Luck!!!

I agree with not thinking of it as money. but for me it is not befor the tournament that I get those nervers. It is after when I think I cant belive I did that. But that is the way I feal in poker or big Karate tournaments so for me that is life

you should play multiple tourneys at a time to release tention if u can

more games play them at a time it will def help

No! if I lose 1 dollar on pokerstars, that is much worse for me than 1 dollar in real life (i know kinda stupid)
I could easily go to a casino with 50 bucks in my pocket, than I can go to a cash/tourney with 50 bucks.

Btw, I never play live.

thats poker, you have to deal with it.

is common in all the players have that fear but in your case is different happens to me when I enter final table happened to me when I won a first place from 3200 and 1260 and several other final tables but with time one gets used

Should not be afraid! Most importantly, be patient and focus! That is my advice!

Play with in the same game your comfortable with. It was good enough to get the results to be able to compete in the next level.

Instead of doing steps, start with low buyins and work your way up. You need to be completely comfortable if you want to do well. Practice good BRM and don't play out of your limit.

scared is god make you tight end thas god thing...

I'm pretty sure everyone has been nervous for their first big buy in tournament. Or, for a much larger buy in tournament than usual. Best advice is to play like you normally do, and to try to not win the tournament on the first hand. Besides, maybe it's best to be nervous at the start, instead of the bubble.
