What are the Suit Rankings for Hold Em?

This question is really starting to bother me know. I always thought it was Spades, Hearts, Clubs, Diamonds, the order you get when you open a brand new deck. But, you never really need suit ranking in Hold Em, so I never really thought about it too much.

I have tried googling this question several times before, and I get a bunch of crap, from a bunch of unknown sites.

Was discussing this with a friend, and now its really bothering me. This is the best info I can get from Google, but there's nothing to say this site has any authority on this subject:


Rank of Suits

In holdem there is no rank of suits. The only time that a rank of suits will affect a holdem player is when players draw for seats or during a chip race. It is used in some other poker games, mostly in games where tied hands and split pots would lead to complicated results. When using the rank of suits, the actual rank of the card (Ace, Seven, Queen, etc.) is still the main factor. It is only in cases where two cards have the same rank when the suits are compared.

The rank of suits is, from highest to lowest:

1. Spade
2. Heart
3. Diamond
4. Club

I cannot find any site with better authority on the subject. Probably because like they say, there are no suit rankings in Hold Em.


But this is my problem, suit rankings definitely come in to play in drawing for seat order, and when sites and rooms/casinos are running promotions involving high hands.

In drawing for seats, in every Hold Em tournament I ever played in, in card room and casinos, the Ace of Spades is the best card to get, and you automatically are awarded the button. I dont remember how seats have been decided in the event of tied high cards, except for Spades always wins.


So, if anyone knows the correct answer to this question, and can site a legitimate source, please do so.

I think , according to my father , a professional poker player , that all that stories about the A of spades being the best card is referring to old games where some suits were better than others.
Like I said , im not sure and neither my dad , but he thinks that is one of the reasons

Suit ranks in poker come up for drawing seats and chip races "Race Off" and same suit ranks used in Contract Bridge

if your looking for better authority on the subject, call a casino.
there is no mentioning of what the ranks are in the WSOP* rules by it does mention mention "chip race"

Section VI - 69
Chip race rule: Race-off is defined as removal of a denomination chip no longer in use. When it is time to color-up chips, they will be raced off with a maximum of one chip going to any player. The chip race will always start at the first player left of the dealer.

A player cannot be raced out of a Tournament. In the event that a player has only one chip remaining, the regular race procedure will take place. If that player loses the race, he or she will be given one chip of the smallest denomination still in play.

Players found to have lower denomination chips remaining in their stack after the race-off will forfeit those chips unless they are equivalent in value to a chip still in play. Players are encouraged to witness the chip race.

I wasn't aware that Suits had a rank in any poker... Lol

well the truth is any time u start with suited cards it increases your odds by like 3%..... i know that not what u where reffering to.. just saying

for me, spades definitely is my lucky suit

It also comes into affect in determining the button at the beginning of some tourneys. I believe that's the correct order because I know that's right for the seven card draw games for the bring in.
