using limit to build a roll

I've found it easier to use limit online especially when starting from $0 to eliminate the variance and risk of losing your entire stack when playing with only a few dollars. Yes your wins are capped but I believe it more then makes up for the inherent risk of variance, especially on the online scene. Play limit build up enough to play in $1.10 sng's and build your stack from there. Just my .02 that I've found works best and is easiest for me. Keep taking shots at $1.10 sng's until your can get your BR up to around $10-15 then move up limits.

if it works for you that is great..i use to build rolls on carbon playing limit poker..but my mistake was trying to move to fast. maybe 10-15 bucks will for ya but you need a little more imo to move higher if you going to follow a strict brm..

I believe $5 is more than enough to be playing lowest limit (.05/.1) and once your up to around 15 you should be able to move up as your not risking your entire stack at any one time just having it on the table and you can only lose up to the max allowed. But yeah I guess play with what your comfortable with.

as I said do what works for you, but in terms of taking shots and being able to more quickly enter into $1 sngs and eventually $2-$3 etc. I believe this strategy works well, i'm not sitting there playing specifically limit, it is used for hit n runs and being able to use money for sng's which is where the real moneys made...to each his own...thanks for the constructive comment.

Hell I didnt start to play $2 sng regularly until I reached the $100 mark. Whatever you do stay away from the casino!:rolleyes:

that must of been extremely slow...when I build a roll I like to take shots at higher tournaments within reason...that's the best way to build a big roll. With $50 you could afford to take a shot or two at $2 sngs easily and if you win that's a big chunk added to your roll and if you lose it's really not that much...you took your shot and it didn't work oh well...I built a successful $400 roll on carbon doing this and taking shots that I've since cashed out(I hate carbon) and am now working on bovada which is surprisingly a little less on the bad beat/river side and I like it a lot better. Nothing in gambling/poker is 100% you gotta take risks.

edit: In no way did I say play $2 sng's regularly...if that was your point...that would be nonsense.

My strategy more or less:

Win a $1 or so in free roll. Play limit grind it to $2-$5. Enter a $1 SnG hopefully place (Usually do as these aren't that hard just play good cards, steal blinds when on button etc. rather standard) Rinse and repeat if lose and have no money to keep doing this with. Resort back to limit. Do this while playing freerolls etc. I've tried the NL approach and it's very hit/miss and you either make it quick or your out and have nothing

i think limit is a fine strategy in the lower stakes, but eventually u want to move up to no limit. maybe with 15 dollar bankroll move to .05/.10 NL

that is a recipe to go broke.

I like full ring limit, which Merge got rid of. However, OP clearly doesn't give a hoot about BRM. The lowest limit of FLHE on Merge is .02/.04 and I wouldn't play it until I had $16. $1 SNGs I didn't play until I have $22. You know how I made that much?? Freerolls. It took time, but it was easy and gave me a bankroll I could comfortably play with to not go bust. I may not make much money, but I'm not losing any of my own money.

i cant tell you how many people i know that cash out big all the time but as soon as they do and have a small bankroll they go broke...bankroll management is very key part of the game

I'd suggest having at least 30 buy ins to start a level. Some people insist on 100, but I think 30 is enough. I started $1.10 SnG with $30, then the $3 SnG at $100.

It's important to have a lot of buy ins, because bad variance CAN and will get you, no matter how good of a player you are. You gotta have the cushion to stick it out. If you move up ranks quickly, you will bust out.

When you're in the micros, don't think of it as making money, think of it as gaining experience. You want to stay there as long as you can.

Unless a player is a robot playing with scared money is going to negatively effect decisions. I consider myself a pretty good limit player; I've made thousands playing LHE. But I've never been able to win when I've had only a few buy-ins. I think that bankroll management is crucial.

all right lets try another freeroll I don't know how to play online I guess cause I played professionally for a year of live poker and did very well. I cant beat stupied I guess.

well I've since turned a 1.60 cash and a subsequent .40 cash in my only 2 freerolls in bovada into 14.70 playing limit and taking chances on $1 sng's so if you play very disciplined its a viable strategy. Got a bit of cushion now so well see how it goes. Building rolls on new sites from scratch is always fun. In limit you have to just only play really premium hands with a low roll people will call with anything in limit and you can often win anywhere from .5-$1 in one hand very easily with all the calling stations and newbie players who don't really know what they're doing.

I have made the mistake a lot of increasing my stakes too fast. For example, I on average win a heads up sit n go about 60% of the time which is pretty profitable in the long run, but if I were to bet my entire bankroll every time which I have done before, I still obviously lose eventually. If I bet responsibly and try to keep at least 10 buyins on hand in my bankroll, I do pretty good.

i kind of enjoy limit cash games if you got a low roll. they're pretty fun. A total different gameplay though.

so you spend all day trying to turn $1 into $5? why not get a job, instead? wtf are you gonna do with $5, buy a happy meal?

yea a fixed limit game you have to play different than a nlh game because some will call with anything in a fixed limit game and will usually hit out on you.so just play tight in a fixed game

um maybe because I just play for fun and enjoy the challenge of building a roll from scratch?? I only use limit as a way to reduce risk when building a roll at first... I'm already up to $33 dollars and now play the occasional .02/.05 nl game but mostly just stick to sng's and tournaments $.5/$1 buy ins the occasional $2. Just a matter of time now before i cash big in one of these and can successfully start to move up the stakes. I just enjoy playing poker so the money isn't an issue for me. If i want to play for big money i'll go to the casino and play live.

Some good tips on here.. I would recommend just playing the micro of the micro until you 10x your deposit. But just don't jump up and expect the same play.. Be cautious and jump back down if you need to

yeah limit is a good idea for a slow steady build, but its also easy to lose quick

i myself am not a fan of limit...guess depends on the stake and player level....you tend to have way too many limpers...calling stations....when u get to the higher levels....you see way too many hero calls due to lack of size of the pot...

yeah i much prefer to play no limit much better field i think

Once I enter no limit with my roll I tend to get too aggressive. Although I think the tip aboout building up in limit and then playing with part of roll in no limit is good.

where are you playing at with limit? i can never seem to get a game going on bcp even 1 2 cent limit

id play sngs or something else other than that game.

There is a definitely a point after you have grinded out of $0 to move onto no limit. but of course, grinding on limit with less than $5 is usually good strategy

bovada, also just ofund out had $1 left in my carbon account lol lets see how far we can get this, got it up to $4.50 so far lol see if can do another $1-$200

Carbons tough though i hate their software so well see how it goes
they do have $1 double ups though which are primeee br builders sadly bovada only thinks $5 people should get those :(

I disagree with Limit a way to build a bankroll... Limit is tough as you seem to always have 5 callers every hand and really have to get lucky not to get drawn out on. NO Limit is where you should play to build a bankroll but the key factor is follow your bankroll buy in with min. Don't worry about your $10.00 against $50.00 bankrolls sitting there with you. LOSE the aggressive style and play tight. If you have the winner you will soon be sitting with $50 then leave and join another table with $10.00 again. If you lose it wont kill your bank and you can rebuy from those bad beats. Good Luck!

limit is cool but its tougher to build a roll with in my opinion, in NL games it goes fast and you win allins at micros
