There are tons of old sayings or dumb superstions people live by as a general rule for them in poker, one of mine is ....
" If you win the first pot you wont win the last pot "
I got called out on this tonight in tournament i played at casino first hand i was dealt I just mucked em didnt even look at em, which I do every tournament I play live just a habit and I dont even remember where i first heard that...
What are some things yall do like this? (playing any two suited cards does not count)
Wow, u could be picking up Aces on that first hand. For me though, I don't really have superstitions. I do know that there are those that will order the same thing constantly if they keep winning, or like Sammy Farha, if he loses a pot, he gets a new cigarette.
JLynn, I might steal your lil fold first hand rule when playing a live tourney lol.
i am NOT superstitious or religious at all, so NOTHING applies in my life... karma, none of that. I do not believe that we live in a / the twilight zone. no such thing as luck, hot streaks, none of that. Only real thing is numbers, sometimes numbers repeat repeatedly, its of no mysterious value though. Statistical anomalies and improbabilities just happen, they just do... they have to, or they wouldn't be numbers.

nothing, it is silly and ignorant to think it does anything, just play.
I never looked at it that way. But I can recall a few occasions when playing live that I won first had and then busted out. Will pay more attention to that one. May have something there.
I like to win the first hand actually, it puts me in a good mindset from jump street.
So we have opposite superstitions
muckin the first one gives me the mindset of patience and not an over eagerness to put chips in the middle, tournaments are a marathon not a sprint slow and steady wins....Quote:

I don't believe in superstitions per say. In my opinion anything and everything is possible in the game of poker. I suppose things could work as far as being beneficial or not during certain activities if you will but everyone believes different things etc. Nonetheless, good luck to everyone both on and off the felts. *hugs*

Yeah we always called it the "death" hand. If you win first hand you can bet on not finishing good LOL Only 2 hands ill play the first hand with is AA or KK, but if that happens i know my luck will be bad for where i finish if i even finish in the money.Quote:

i kinda agree with this, i have noticed if i start out doing good, i end up doing bad and vice versa

I seem to hit every time I play Q10 on the button, so I do.
not really superstitous but i always listen to musicwhen playing for more than a hour and thats about it dont have a lucky hand or alucky penny or anything like that lol

I am sure that this is just me but at the very beginning of a session if i end up winning the first pot that i play (besides checking/completing from the blinds) like the first pot that i willingly am putting chips into then i tend to have an overall good/winning session.

Superstitions can be dangerous, IMO. It's all a twist on ego. If you think something is going to help you, and you really believe it deep down, then it probably is going to help you. But, wearing yellow socks or mucking the first hand by default don't actually have ANY effect on the cards or other players. What changes is the state of mind of the person who puts those socks on, or who mucks that hand. If you can get your mind right you will see results, and however you decide to do it is irrelevant.
I play a regular game with a guy who swears he always wins when he holds diamonds, lol. I've burned him so many times I've lost count, yet he maintains. If he thinks it helps, I let him think that. Then I count his $$.
Wasup with players having an item on the table is that for luck? Lol like ivy and his apple
Here's one that never seems to fail, but I never seem to learn from: Sure as shit, if you bust someone's chops for making a dumb play, they'll outlast you in the tourney.
