You are not doing anything wrong, only certain subforums give the points. I am not sure which ones they are.

Certain sections do give them. Crowdflower is easy and quick points once you get the hang of them. Also radio loyalty gives 5 points 3very 10 min after you enter the captcha, it does pay on delay.
