Moving to Vegas for 5 Months After College

    Hello All

Ill be graduating college in May (from Auburn) and considering moving to Vegas for 6 months to just grind poker and experience Vegas for a short time before getting a "real" job and using my degree. Below is what I will be planning on doing in terms of everyday life and just wanted peoples opinion.

First off I was lucky enough not to have to pay my way through college (my parents gave me 4 years to get through then it was on my dime - i got through thank god). While in college I worked in a bar/restaurant and made a good amount of money. I also have won a fair amount online pre black friday. I currently have 27k in the bank for Vegas.

Now I would be renting an apartment - small - for 6 months (right now Vegas is very very cheap - only way I could do this)

Apartment would be roughly 750-1k per month including all the utilities. So 6 months say that would 6k (on the high side).

I would be left with 21k to grind and live with. During this time it will be the WSOP and Im honestly not going to play any events but maybe a small 1k event and going to play some smaller buy in side events.

On a day to day basis I would be grinding 1-3 (300 buy in) at the Aria and playing the small $150 daily mtt there and at the Venetian at 12pm and 7pm.

At the Aria you gain $3 per hour poker comps which I honestly will be playing 8+ hrs a day for 5 days a week (Im treating this like a 9-5 job). So 40 hrs (min a week) x $3 comp = $120 comps per week.

I would be using these comps once a week for a decent dinner or to see a show. I mean come on I ate pb&j and ramen noodles for 4 years to save money to do this.

My question to everyone is does anyone think this is just crazy (aka my mother) and if so why or why not? I mean come on you only live once its only 6 months of my life and I have a stable background with a degree. Just want to do something like this for a short period of time before I have to USE my degree in the "real" world and Hey you never know what will happen in Vegas!!!

(Also Im not like a degen gambler who will be betting craps, bj, and sports while Im out there, It will be strictly Poker).

    Thanks

on a side note...i would start at the 1-2 as you will be there for 6 months...plus buy ins at 1-2 are sometimes up to 500$ out there. so 21k might not be as much as it seems....

I know a lady who moved to Vegas to try and make a living playing poker. She was a good player and had plenty of confidence going in. I have kept up with her, for it has been 1 year now and she says it was not what she thought it was going to be like.

She has visited Vegas many times before her decision. You have a nice stack to go with so i wish you all the luck and hope that you leave with a nice profit.

Let us know when you leave and represent pokerowned man!!

I say go for it...Im headed out to Vegas this summer June (most likely) for a short time to play out there for a bit and hit up some tournaments...I play live now about 5-6 days a week between the 1-2 and 2-5nl tables with a few tournaments here or there. I've been using the money I've been winning to pay for college and stuff (Working on the Bachelor's right now) I didn't qualify for any grants or financial aid or anything since I work a full time job durin the day (the usually 8-5 M-F grind).

The Venetain has 1-2 nl (500 max) but Looking at the Aria they have 1-3 nl (300 max) either one is what I would be looking to playing to start off. Plus Aria has about 7-10 1-3nl games running during peak hours.

I think it's a great idea!! Only change or alteration to your plan I would offer is to budget a set amount per day and play the limit tables. Most players will recognize each other in a set venue within a few days, and if you become a regular at any small casino, no-one minds when you rape the tourists (financially!!). The standard of play on the limit tables is pretty good from the regulars...a lot of 'em old timers like me, and you reduce the donk effect while still being able to steadily earn a stake for your larger gambles. Whichever way you go I wish you luck and patience, 'cos one impatient moment there will dump a weeks work every time! Been there...done that!

I have a friend here in chicago that grinds at the 1 dollar 2 dollar annie table 6 days a week... he sits down with 200 and leaves when he hits 500 daily..... if he loose he leaves too.. most days he leave within 3 hours and he says 5 out of 6 days a week he wins.... so i am sure you can do it!!!!!!!!!!!!
